As we approach the end of the year, it's not just a time for festivities and holiday cheer; it's also the perfect time for reflection. It is easy to get caught in the trap of continually pushing forward without taking stock of successes and expressing gratitude to those who assisted in the accomplishments. It is also exciting to cast our gaze ahead, assess the challenges on the horizon, and strategize on how best to overcome them in the new year.
Looking Back on 2023:
This year's achievements have been nothing short of remarkable. Across Kansas, our school districts have achieved some of the highest graduation rates ever—an accomplishment that stands as a testament to the dedication of educators, administrators, and the entire community.
Beyond graduation rates, our districts have successfully implemented Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Character Education programs, resulting in increased post-secondary success. Many students are now graduating with industry-recognized certifications or completed college credits, providing them with a strong foundation for their future endeavors.
It was an election year, which means that changes are coming in the new year when new board members take their seats. Although the transition of board members can lead to a potential loss of institutional knowledge and wisdom, it is important to also recognize that each election brings with it an opportunity to welcome fresh perspective and knowledge to your board table.
At KASB, our commitment to supporting our members has never been stronger. Here's a glance at a few of the things we've accomplished in 2023:
Looking Ahead at KASB:
Advocacy remains a cornerstone for our organization, and we're gearing up for the 2024 Legislative Session. We also provide opportunities for districts to grow their advocacy, such as our 2024 Advocacy in Action Conference on Jan. 17-18, which is currently open for registration. Join public school advocates from across Kansas to discuss critical issues and meet your locally elected policymakers. Learn more about this event on our website.
We are already planning for the 2024 Summer Leadership Institute on June 14-15, and we're working hard to create additional opportunities for leadership development at the conference. Stay tuned for more details!
Start a journey with professional development and consider joining one of our amazing cohorts, such as the Leadership for Tomorrow (LFT) Cohort, which is currently accepting nominations. This cohort offers an opportunity to explore new theories, gain leadership skills, and broaden your understanding of education and key issues—all centered around elevating student achievement.

Moving Forward in Your District:
As you look forward in your district, seek out opportunities to expand collaboration with the community, parents and other stakeholders. Find opportunities to work together with the common belief that students can be successful in Kansas schools and explore ways to make that belief a reality.
For new board members, remember that you are starting a journey where a focus on personal interests should transition into advocating for community interests. This shift requires a mindset change from campaigning to governing as we enter the new year.
