Examining and Comparing Kansas Teacher Salaries

Teacher salaries are an important consideration as districts seek to hire and retain staff. Last year, the total average Kansas teacher salary, including supplemental pay and fringe benefits, was $65,870. Among districts, this ranged from a low of $39,798 to a high of $80,889. 

Mark Tallman, KASB Associate Executive Director of Educational Advocacy recently evaluated how Kansas teacher salaries stack up. 

In examining Kansas teacher salaries, relevant factors include overall state averages in Kansas and other states, how teachers compare with workers outside of the education system, and the difference in the number of school district employees.

Key findings on Kansas teacher salaries:

• They are not keeping up with inflation
• They are not competitive with other states
• They are not competitive with other jobs requiring similar levels of college education
• Kansas per pupil funding is relatively low 
• Kansas has fewer students per teacher than most states
