Steve Pemberton

Best Selling Author, Philanthropist, Acclaimed Speaker

Steve Pemberton’s story is about defying seemingly insurmountable odds to become a trail-blazing corporate executive, enlightened diversity leader, visionary youth advocate, and acclaimed speaker. His best-selling memoir, A Chance in the World, recounts his triumphant life journey and drive to become a man of resilience, determination and vision. Now an upcoming major motion picture, A Chance in the World further amplifies Steve’s highly motivational messages: Believe in your dreams, rise above obstacles, create opportunities for others, and most of all, persevere.

Rebecca Lewis-Pankratz works with communities and schools across the U.S. to truly solve poverty and heal trauma. She does this by helping brilliant and caring leaders create sustainable ecosystems of resilience by building better relationships.

Rebecca fought her way out of poverty and the trailer park in 2011 with three young sons. A local poverty resolution project found Rebecca and activated her journey. She later worked for that non-profit and then went on to build multiple projects like it to help more families. In 2015, she began work in public education and ignited a trauma-informed schools movement in Kansas and beyond.

Rebecca experienced a lifetime of trauma and poverty. Through access to buffering relationships, she healed from both and continues to light the path for others.

District Showcase

New in 2023, District Showcase is designed to display your learners' best quality of work. KASB member districts are invited to submit a standout program that promotes student growth and opportunity. The 20 districts selected to be part of the 2023 Showcase will receive a certificate of recognition and a $250 program donation.

Each Kansas district is unique — help us celebrate the countless ways districts inspire students to reach their goals and explore their world.

Applications will open on August 14, and selected districts will be announced on September 21.
