More Information on our New Board Member Trainings

There are few elected positions as important to the future of our communities as a school board member. As election season wraps up and new educational leaders prepare to take their seats on boards of education across the state, KASB is here to help them become the best board member they can be. This year, the association is excited to offer a slate of New Board Member Trainings that will focus on the legal aspects of being a school board member, along with the key areas of work that school boards influence. New school board members are encouraged to attend with a mentor school board member along with the superintendent to provide the local context for the content that will be shared. The season pass eligible training will be offered on-site and online throughout the winter.

Participants in the New Board Member Training will look at service on their board of education through the Eight Characteristics of Effective Boards. This framework examines the critical functions of a board and its members, the scope of authority and responsibility granted to a board, the keys to building an effective district leadership team, and an in-depth review of the functions of a school district.

Attendees of the training will also receive custom-built resources to guide them on their journey as board members. Our newly developed Board Table Cheat Sheet is designed for board members to keep with them during meetings of their board. It includes tips on the rules of order, the scope of responsibilities during the meeting, and more. In addition, our reimagined Board Member Handbook will also be shared. The handbook takes a deep dive into the key functions of a board of education while providing helpful guidance tied back to the Eight Characteristics of Effective Boards.

You won’t want to miss the opportunity to connect new board members to this training. Be sure to share this information with your newly elected board of education members so they can work with your team to register for the New Board Member Trainings before their first board meeting.
