State Board of Education elects new officers

The Kansas State Board of Education on Tuesday elected Jim Porter as chair and Janet Waugh as vice chair.

Porter, R-Fredonia, has served on the board since 2015 and Waugh, D-Kansas City, has served on the board since 1999. Both have held the position of board chairs before.

The board also elected Deena Horst, R-Salina, and Ben Jones, R-Sterling, as legislative liaisons.

Jean Clifford, R-Garden City, Betty Arnold, D-Wichita, and Horst were elected to the Policy Committee.

Prior to the meeting, Kansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Marla Luckert swore in the 10 board members for the new term. Two new members include Melanie Haas, D-Overland Park, and Arnold.
