Rachel Russell

Ex-Officio

Rachel Russell has served on the Kansas City Kansas, USD 500 Board of Education for two years. She also currently serves as the Ex-Officio member on the KASB Board of Directors.

Motivated by a desire to build connections with students and staff within USD 500, Rachel chose to join her local board. Outside of her board responsibilities, Rachel serves as the Director of Community Engagement for a non-profit organization focused on addressing housing and food insecurity in Wyandotte County.

Rachel sees herself as a voice of today's parents and advocate for ensuring student voices and perspectives are represented at decision-making tables. In her district, Rachel’s goal is to propel academic achievements forward while also ensuring that the needs and aspirations of students are adequately addressed.

As a member of the KASB Board, Rachel wants to learn from fellow district leaders and contribute to strengthening the foundation of her local board by exchanging strategies and ideas statewide.

Growing up, Rachel drew inspiration from her mother, who instilled in her the values of resilience and hard work. Her mother's unwavering encouragement continues to embolden Rachel to be true to herself and pursue her aspirations fearlessly.

In high school, Rachel faced adversity as a teenage mother. However, the continued support and belief in her potential from two educators—her debate coach, Mrs. Montgomery, and her Algebra teacher, Ms. McAfee—played a pivotal role in her success.

A guiding principle in Rachel's life is summed up in her favorite quote: "Love the life you live; live the life you love."
