Why Use KASB Superintendent Search Services

Board members are aware that in successful school districts the Board and superintendent work as a team. There is a common goal, to improve student achievement, but both sides must work at keeping the relationship wholesome, effective and communications open. So when boards are seeking the right team player, a superintendent who will fit their district and whose professional skills are outstanding, it is prudent to secure outside assistance.

The Kansas Association of School Boards is the first place boards should turn for help to select a new superintendent. KASB has successfully offered superintendent search services for almost forty years. Since KASB is the only state organization whose primary goal is to serve Kansas boards of education, it is only logical that member boards would turn to KASB for help in finding the right superintendent.

KASB has competent, experienced and helpful staff dedicated to the principle of serving local boards of education. The staff is well acquainted with school leaders in Kansas and the midwest. They are in a position to make recommendations as to the professional work, skill level and instructional leadership qualities of most individuals who would be interested in applying for a Kansas superintendent position.

The 10 Critical Points
of the KASB Superintendent Search

  1. The vacancy will be posted on the KASB Web site.
  2. KASB provides mailing labels to mail the informational brochure to Kansas superintendents and to the educational placement offices in universities in Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Kansas.
  3. KASB provides suggestions regarding an informational brochure, which will be posted on the KASB Web site and may also be sent to every Kansas district.
  4. KASB will recommend a suitable timeline for the district's superintendent selection process. Although it is negotiable, it is recommended to allow at least six to eight weeks between the announcement of the opening until the closing of applications.
  5. Districts using KASB search services will be provided an on-line application process.
  6. KASB will receive all applications and process them for the school board. The completed applications will be brought to the district on screening day, and they will remain in the district for one year. KASB recommends that one employee in the district be designated as the contact person to field questions regarding the superintendent opening.
  7. KASB staff will come to the district and conduct characteristics or focus group sessions with community, student, teacher and administrative representatives, to obtain valuable input on what characteristics others recommend to the board for the new superintendent.
  8. KASB offers the unique service of providing a current salary listing, which includes the tenure and other assignments of every Kansas superintendent. In addition, KASB provides a salary comparison of the local district with school district of comparable size so board members can see where their district ranks with similar districts.
  9. The KASB screening process takes place the day after the application process closes. At the conclusion of the screening day the screeners present three to five finalists to the entire board. Each finalist interviewed should be given a day for his/her interview and each should be treated exactly the same.
  10. KASB provides a sample superintendent contract to school boards that may be used as is or as a guide as they prepare to offer their final choice a contract. This sample contract, which was developed by the KASB legal staff and KASA officers, is a valuable asset for boards.
As part of our search process KASB will provide on-going support for the Board and new superintendent. This includes a meeting to help the Board and superintendent establish mutual expectations. Staff will also be available for follow-up consultation with the Board and superintendent.

Our role is to not only help select a superintendent but to do all in our power to ensure a successful relationship continues between the Board and superintendent. We consider our process to be a partnership not only during the selection phase, but beyond.

This "partnership for success" is included in our overall fee.
