Claims Administration
Beginning July 1, 2005, in an effort to control claims' costs and reduce administrative costs, the Kansas Association of School Boards Workers Compensation Fund assumed self-admininstration of claims. Self-administration of claims also aids management and members in more timely identification of trends.
Loss Control
The Fund will continue to place a high priority on loss control/loss prevention. Safety is an important aspect in the workplace. The goal is to assist our members in lowering their workers compensation premiums by providing a well-managed safety program. Members with high loss ratios not only suffer with high premiums, but impact the Fund as a whole by increasing costs. We will continue to use the Alternative Risk Services (ARS) for loss control/loss prevention services. The person handling that for ARS is Allen Keehler; most of the membership is familiar and has worked with Allen in the past. We will also be utilizing the assistance of Dr. Bill Majors, Assistant Executive Director/Education Services, to help Allen with loss control services.

General Information
The KASB Workers Compensation Fund, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation which was organized for the purpose of providing risk management services to the members of KASB.
A separate governing board is required by the statutes covering insurance pools in
Kansas. The members of the governing board, Trustees, are appointed to three-year terms by the President of KASB and confirmed by the KASB Board of Directors. There are currently 11 Trustees and they meet five times per year. The Board of Trustees elect a Chairman and a Vice Chairman for a one-year period. Insurance services have a separate budget as the monies collected from school districts must be kept apart from other KASB revenue. However, it should be remembered that insurance is a service of KASB just as any other service offered by the Association. Also, the people delivering the services are employees of KASB.
The Workers Compensation Fund, Inc. provides protection to over 50,000 school employees in Kansas. This is a group-funded pool and is not an
insurance company subject to the general laws, rules and regulations relating to insurance companies. However, the group-funded pools are subject to separate regulation by the Kansas Department of Insurance as authorized by state statute and cannot commence or continue operations without a certificate of authority.
As a member of the KASB Workers Compensation Fund, Inc., you become a key player in making decisions regarding your district’s claims. The KASB Work Comp staff keeps you informed every step of the way on the status of your school’s claims, using a comprehensive claims report and personal consultations.
